Security Alert In North Belfast Ends
Residents have returned to their homes after a suspicious device was found in north Belfast.
The device, which was discovered by workmen as they were clearing drains in the area, has been sent for further examination.
A number of roads were closed in the area during the alert on Monday, 06 November, however they have since reopened.
Detective Inspector Paul Rowland said: "We are unsure at present as to how or when it came to be left in the drain and would ask anyone who has any information which could assist us with our enquiries to contact officers."
SDLP North Belfast Councillor Paul McCusker said: "This area of the city has schools and is a densely populated residential area. We could have been dealing with a significant tragedy here.
"Those behind this device have nothing to offer the people of North Belfast. The path of violence that they continue to pursue has been rejected by people across this city and across this island. They should get off the backs of people living here.
"Commuters and local people experiences chaos today as the Antrim road was closed between Carlisle Circus and the New Lodge Road. This is a major thoroughfare in the North of the city and the disruption was significant.
"I would encourage anyone with information to come forward as soon as possible."
