Call for Aldergrove to be used as NI's main air hub
North Antrim MLA, Ian Paisley jnr has called on the government to seriously consider utilising Belfast International Airport as Northern Ireland's main air hub.
His comments follow launch of the Aviation White paper which could lead the way for more late night flights at Belfast City Airport.
However, this plan has come under attack from local residents who say the proximity of the airport to east Belfast's built up area would be a "disaster waiting to happen".
Mr Paisley jnr said: "With the Government now seriously addressing the future of civil aviation in the UK, I believe that an opportunity now exists to enhance the role of Belfast International Airport.
"I understand the concerns of residents in East Belfast and North Down about the expansion of services out of Belfast City Airport. The City Airport has brought immense benefits to Northern Ireland and I hope it continues to do so for many years to come. If it is, however, unable to accommodate the expected increases in air travel in Northern Ireland for whatever reason, then I am confident that Belfast International can fill the void."
Because of its proximity to the city, Belfast City Airport operates under a number of planning restrictions including the prevention of late night flights.
Among other proposals announced by Transport Secretary Alistair Darling are new runways at Stansted and Heathrow and proposals for future development of City of Derry Airport in conjunction with the Irish Government.
