Queen's University Appoints New Vice-Chancellor
Queen's University in Belfast has appointed a new Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Ian Greer, who was born and educated in Scotland, is currently Vice President of The University of Manchester.
Professor Greer's appointment was approved at a meeting of Senate, the University's Governing Body.
Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Senate, Mr Stephen Prenter, said: "I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Ian Greer as our new President and Vice-Chancellor. Professor Greer has an international reputation of academic excellence and has held major strategic and leadership roles in higher education for some 25 years, most recently at The University of Manchester and at the University of Liverpool.
"I know that with his track record of extraordinary leadership, he will be an inspirational leader for Queen’s University and I wish him every success."
Professor Greer said: "It is a great honour and privilege to be selected as the 13th President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast. I very much look forward to working, in partnership with staff and students, to build on the outstanding achievements of previous Vice-Chancellors including, in particular, Professor Patrick Johnston, a former colleague and fellow clinician.
"I have great affection for Northern Ireland and tremendous respect for the University. Queen's has an enviable reputation for research, education and innovation and plays a major leadership role in the economic, social and cultural development of Northern Ireland."
Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said: "I would like to congratulate Prof Ian Greer who has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast.
"Queen’s University is a world-class institution in both education and research and innovation, it plays a key role in our society and economy.
"I look forward to working with Prof Greer in the time ahead as he takes up his new appointment."

Student security campaign launched by police
Police today encouraged students to ‘lock up before they leave’ as part of a new ‘It’s Good 2 B Secure’ campaign. As most students start or return to school this week, a specially produced film, aimed at raising awareness about securing property, will be shown to all students as they start the new semester.

Woman Dies In Co Down Road Crash
A woman has died following a road collision near Laurencetown in Co Down. Cindy Greer, aged 58, died in hospital following the crash on the Banbridge Road. Her Honda Civic collided with a Ford Transit van at around 5.30pm on Wednesday, 03 October. The driver of the van was treated, however his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Young Woman Killed In Armagh Car Crash
A young woman has been killed in a car collision near Armagh. The 21-year-old woman was driving on the Hamiltonsbawn Road shortly before 8.45 am on Thursday when her car crashed with another vehicle. It is understood the driver of that car was treated in hospital for injuries but they are not thought to be serious at this stage.
