British And Irish Govts To Attend Intergovernmental Conference
Ministers from the British and Irish Governments will meet today, 25 July, for their first intergovernmental conference for the first time February 2007.
The previous meeting, more than a decade ago, came just before the DUP and Sinn Féin agreed to enter a power-sharing agreement at Stormont.
Today's meeting takes place amid the ongoing stalemate in the NI executive, which collapsed some 18 months ago.
According to reports, the British government has been resistant to convening the conference, as historically the DUP are said to be "suspicious" over the Irish government's influence in Northern Ireland's affairs.
