Dungannon School Fire Start Deliberately - NIFRS
A fire at a disused school in Country Tyrone is being investigated as arson, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) has said.
The fire at the former St Patrick's Academy on the Killymeal Road, Dungannon was reported on Sunday night.
Six appliances and 45 firefighters attended the scene and it took a number of hours to bring the blaze under control.
It is believed that the fire was started deliberately in a disused portacabin at the centre of the school site. It is understood that firecrews were able to stop the blaze spreading to the main school building.
NIFRS Group Commander, Max Joyce, warned that those starting fires deliberately are putting people's lives at risk.
Anyone with information about the fire has been asked to contact police.
Commenting on the fire, Sinn Féin Fermanagh South Tyrone MP, Michelle Gildernew, said: "Whether accidental or deliberate, fires are incredibly dangerous and destructive so I would urge everyone to exercise extreme caution.
"I would also like to appeal to everyone to report any suspicious activity as the deliberate lighting of fires is reckless and completely unacceptable."
She added: "I would like to recognise the selfless efforts of the emergency services who are at the scene tackling the fire."

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

The Home Fire Safety Check coincides with Fire Safety Week, which runs from September 30th to October 6th. The initiative aims to reduce the number of house fires in Northern Ireland.

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.

An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.
