Firework Safety Warning After Kilkeel Blaze
Police have issued a warning to parents and children emphasising the dangers of using fireworks, following an incident in Kilkeel after two thatched cottages caught fire.
The incident happened in the Greencastle Street area just after 8 o'clock on Tuesday 09 October.
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) and police responded to the incident and both fires were quickly extinguished.
Only minor damage was caused to the thatched roof of both cottages.
The occupants of the two houses, a woman in her 60's and a man in his 40's were uninjured.
A firework from the scene was taken for forensic examination.
"In the run up to Halloween, I would urge parents and children to be aware that fireworks can be dangerous when used carelessly," Sergeant Macdonald said.
"Fireworks are explosives and there is no telling what damage they can cause to either people or property when not handled correctly. If misused, they can cause serious and life-changing injuries. It is also illegal to possess, sell, handle or use fireworks if you do not have a licence.
"Thankfully, no-one was hurt during this incident in Kilkeel, but nevertheless, the risks are real.
"If you want to see fireworks, please attend an organised event and leave it to the professionals."
Police enquiries into the incident in Kilkeel on Tuesday are continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact them.

Boy injured during firework incident
Police in Newtownabbey are investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident in which a 15-year-old boy was burnt by a firework on Friday morning. It is understood that a firework was placed in the teenager's pocket and ignited during an incident at Glengormley High School in County Antrim.
