Church And Restaurant Targeted In Sion Mills Crime Spree
Police have launched an investigation after hundred of pounds worth of damage was caused in two break-ins at St Theresa's Church and a restaurant in Sion Mills, County Tyrone.
The burglar targeted Restaurant 1861 at the historic Sion Stables some time between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Two tills and an ATM reader were stolen but later recovered.
At St Theresa's Church, a large stained glass window was smashed and attempts were made to steal collection boxes and break into areas where valuables are stored. The burglar sustained cuts and left a trail of blood on the floor and altar.
A police spokesperson said: "A burglary, like any crime, is unacceptable but I'm sure you'll agree that in particular a burglary in any place of worship is particularly sickening and abhorrent.
"This is an attack on the people of Sion Mills, local parishioners and local businesses and we would ask anyone in the area who saw anything suspicious, no matter how innocuous it may seem, to please make contact with us on 101."
The Priest at St Theresa's, Fr Thomas Canning, expressed his shock at the attack which left the community feeling "violated".
"People are just devastated. People hold their church dear to their hearts," he said.

The roadshow, supported by AXA Insurance and the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, aims to educate young drivers about the dangers of irresponsible driving.

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.
