Police Probe Drug Links To Four Deaths Over Christmas
Police are investigating whether a spate of deaths in Belfast over the Christmas period could be related to drug use.
Four young people in their late teens to early 30's are reported to have died in the past two weeks, while more were admitted to emergency departments.
The tragedies led to the PSNI issuing an appeal to the public for information on those dealing drugs in Northern Ireland.
Detective Superintendent Bobby Singleton said: "The loss of a loved one is devastating for a family whatever the time of year, but especially over the holiday period and our thoughts are first and foremost with those affected by these tragic deaths.
"While the cause is not definitively known in any of the four deaths in Belfast, the use of illicit drugs along with prescription drugs may be a factor.
"The vast majority of drug-related deaths in Northern Ireland occur when someone has taken more than one substance, including alcohol."
He continued: "We are committed to restricting the availability of illicit drugs in our communities and have had significant success throughout 2018.
"If you see or know of anyone who is dealing drugs in your local area, contact your local police."

218 Drug-Related Deaths In NI In 2020
A total of 218 drug-related deaths were registered in NI in 2020, the highest number of record and a continuation of an upwards trend. The figure was revealed in the latest report on Drug-related and drug-misuse deaths in Northern Ireland, 2010-2020, published by Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra).

NI Drug Deaths Double
The number of drug related deaths registered each year has more than doubled over the last decade rising from 39 deaths in 1997 to 86 last year. The 86 fatalities were registered in Northern Ireland where the cause of death was drug related, either due to legal or illegal drugs.

Booze Killing More Than Drug Abuse
Alcohol-related deaths in Northern Ireland last year was the highest on record, a report from the NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) has revealed. NISRA said that 283 people died from drink problems in 2009, up from 276 the year before and setting a new high.
