Bakery Fined After NI Child Suffers Allergic Reaction To A Biscuit
A Scottish Bakery has been fined £6,000 after failing to label a biscuit that contained eggs correctly, causing a child from Northern Ireland to suffer a reaction.
The parents of the four-year-old boy were aware of their child's allergy and checked the ingredients on the 'Empire' biscuit, a product of Inverness-Shire based Nevis Bakery Limited. The child later suffered an anaphylactic reaction and was hospitalised after eating the product.
In a case brought by Belfast City Council, the biscuit was removed from sale and a UK-wide product recall was launched. Nevis Bakery was fined a total of £6,000 and ordered to pay over £3,000 in legal costs.
They have since reissued the biscuits with the correct allergen information and ingredients clearly listed on the packaging.

Man Extradited From US Over Historical Child Sex Abuse
A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for a series of indecent assaults on a child in the 1970s. Damien Desmond Anderson, originally from L'Derry, was extradited from the US to face justice. He was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against a female who was 11 years old at the time of the abuse.

At Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon, south Belfast home bakery proprietor John McKeag received a fine of £4,500, with £263 costs, for nine offences under The Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1995.
