Local politicians criticised over recent job losses

The Sales Institute of Ireland (SII) has blamed local politicians for recent job losses announced across the country.

Speaking at the latest in a series of breakfast seminars organised by the SII, Chairman of the SII (NI Branch) Noel Brady urged the representatives of the Assembly to "stand up and take responsibility for the local economy by acting positively to save jobs" following recent losses at Herdmans and TK-EEC.

Levelling his criticism he said: "It is both sad and disappointing that while we continue to pay salaries to our local MLAs, they have spectacularly failed to make any progress whatsoever in bringing the current political impasse to a conclusion.

"Meanwhile the economy here continues to suffer and the uncertainty for both inward and indigenous investors has a negative impact on job creation and retention."

Dundonald based seat belt manufacturer TK-EEC announced last month that it was to close with the loss of 550 jobs.

At the same time 270 workers were made redundant at the Herdmans linen textiles mill in Sion Mills, Co Tyrone.
