Irish Language Bursary Scheme Opens
The Líofa Gaeltacht Bursary Scheme which promotes the use of the Irish language has opened for applications.
Operated by the Department for Communities, the Gaeltacht provides students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in an Irish speaking community, increase their knowledge and use of Irish through attending classes whilst taking part in a wide range of cultural activities including sport and music through the medium of Irish.
The initiative is open to students whose parents are in receipt of a means-tested benefit, or adult learners in receipt of one of the qualifying benefits, who are resident in Northern Ireland.
The popular scheme has operated in very high demand throughout the last seven years, meaning preference is given to those adults or students who have not previously received a bursary and who meet the criteria set out in the application form.
The average cost of the scheme for the Department is around £500 per student, including accommodation and tuition.

The closing date for entrants is 06 March 2020, with successful applicants notified by the end of the month. Around 100 bursaries are issued each year.

Communities Minister Paul Givan has said he has identified funds to continue the Líofa Irish Bursary Scheme. He confirmed his decision to cut the £50,000 grant was not a "political decision". Alliance Leader Naomi Long tweeted: "Relieved Líofa scheme will continue.

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.
