Cannabis Worth Over £500k Seized In One Week
Police have recovered herbal cannabis worth over £500,000 in just over one week after a man carrying a drug-filled suitcase was stopped in south Belfast.
A quantity of the class B drug valued at over £400k was located during a number of searches in south Belfast this week.
The operation came after a suspect carrying a suitcase full of the drug was stopped on the Lisburn Road on Thursday 16 January.
The man was later remanded in custody after being charged with a range of drugs offences.
Police said the search operation was a direct result of the initial incident. Cannabis worth over £500,000 has now been removed from the community in just over a week.
A PSNI spokesperson said: "We remain fully committed to tackling the scourge of drugs in our communities and we will continue to proactively investigate and carry out searches linked to the drugs trade.
"If you have any information about drug dealing, call the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111."

A total of 45 people have been arrested in the past 48 hours in Gardaí a crackdown on the sale and supply of heroin and 'crack' cocaine in the Dublin region. The operation, which involved Garda drug units from Kevin Street, Pearse Street and Store Street stations, resulted in 150 charges being brought, according to Gardaí this morning.

NI Drug Deaths Double
The number of drug related deaths registered each year has more than doubled over the last decade rising from 39 deaths in 1997 to 86 last year. The 86 fatalities were registered in Northern Ireland where the cause of death was drug related, either due to legal or illegal drugs.

218 Drug-Related Deaths In NI In 2020
A total of 218 drug-related deaths were registered in NI in 2020, the highest number of record and a continuation of an upwards trend. The figure was revealed in the latest report on Drug-related and drug-misuse deaths in Northern Ireland, 2010-2020, published by Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra).
