New PSNI Deputy Chief Constable Appointed

Mark Hamilton has been confirmed as the new deputy chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The experienced officer was promoted to the £168,000-a-year post from his position as Assistant Chief Constable.

Mr Hamilton oversaw the Greenvale Hotel tragedy last March and has served in various policing posts across the Belfast and Armagh areas.

Chair of the NI Policing Board Professor Anne Connolly confirmed the appointment last week, saying: "ACC Hamilton, who is currently responsible for District Policing Command in the PSNI, brings wide ranging experience to the role, having served in a range of posts during his 25 year career in policing.

"We are looking forward to working with Mark and wish him well in this key position of support to the Chief Constable."

Police chief Simon Byrne added his congratulations to Mr Hamilton and said he looks forward to collaborating together as they pursue the force's "modernisation agenda".

Justice Minister Naomi Long also welcomed the appointment.

The Alliance MLA said: "I offer my congratulations to Mark Hamilton on his appointment as Deputy Chef constable. Mark brings a wealth of experience to the role as well as an understanding of policing in Northern Ireland and the challenges facing the PSNI."
