Coronavirus: BCC To Hold Special Meeting
Belfast City councillors are to convene in a special meeting to assess the growing threat of coronavirus.
It comes after it emerged that protection measures are to be stepped up in the Republic of Ireland, with all schools, colleges and childcare facilities to close.
A total of 20 cases of the virus have been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Danny Baker said: "Following moves from the Irish government to step up measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Members of Belfast City Council have today agreed to seek guidance from the Northern Ireland Executive and the Public Health Agency.
"They have also agreed to meet as a Special Council urgently to discuss next steps regarding Council staffing, civic responsibilities, services and events. This meeting will take place on Friday evening.
"Elected representatives in Belfast City Council have also reiterated the need to follow public health guidance and to look out for those they know, family and friends who are vulnerable."
