Mayor hails US investment visit
Derry Mayor, Councillor Shaun Gallagher has hailed last week's investment and trade promotion visit to the United States as a "very worthwhile exercise".
The Mayor, accompanied by representatives from industry, commerce, the University of Ulster and the North West ICT Forum spent 10 days in Boston, Seattle and San Jose, forging links with key agencies and raising the profile of Derry and the North West region as a location for trade and investment.
He said: "The visit provided us with a unique opportunity to develop our investment promotion campaign for the North West and to build upon the civic links that exist between the North West region and the cities of Boston, Seattle and San Jose.
"We met with a number of commercial organisations and investment promotion agencies, as well as various urban regeneration and university contacts. The trip also provided us with opportunities to secure partnerships with Invest NI's overseas officers. We hope to continue working with them to raise the profile of the city and the North West, which will in turn assist with our joint efforts to secure investment for the region."
Jacqueline Doherty, Investment Officer with Derry City Council said the visit assisted Council in its efforts to rebuild business links and establish new partnerships.
"The trip provided us with unique opportunities to raise the profile of the city and region and to develop our relationship with Invest NI overseas offices and the various British Consulates offices in these cities," she said. "It is hoped that as a result of the delegation visit, the city will be included in the itinerary of a major trade mission visit from Seattle next year. As a direct result of the trip, we intend holding the first video conferencing link with the Washington Software Alliance, through the North West ICT Forum."
