Driving Tests To Resume In NI
Driving tests are to resume in Northern Ireland after they were suspended four months ago due to lockdown restrictions.
Additional measures have been put in place in an attempt to clear the backlog and demand is believed to be high.
Tests can now resume after 23 April.
Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said: "The DVA has, and continues, to work hard to maximise the availability of test slots and plans to release additional slots in May, June and July to provide further capacity.
"The DVA continues to increase its capacity by recruiting additional examiners and will be offering evening appointments as we move into spring and the brighter nights. The DVA will continue to offer driving tests on a Saturday and driving tests for Heavy Goods Vehicles on Sundays where it is suitable to do so without compromising the integrity of the test. Overtime will also be used to rota off-shift dual role driving examiners to provide further capacity.
"All driving test services across these islands are experiencing high demand with longer than usual waiting times, like all public facing services, the Covid restrictions mean that the DVA has had to adapt its services to ensure that they can be provided safely. The Department, the DVA and I remain committed to minimising disruption and ensuring our plan for the restoration of services is in hand, and most importantly remain committed to protecting the lives of staff and customers during this pandemic."

5,532 Driving Tests Conducted In July 2021
The Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) conducted 5,532 driving tests in July 2021, 53% higher than the five year July average, according to the latest 'DVA Monthly Tests Conducted Statistics'. Following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, driver testing was able to resume from 23 April 2021 onwards.

NI Car Registrations Continue To Grow
The number of new drivers and new car registrations in Northern Ireland continues to grow, according to figures released by the Department of the Environment (DOE). Over 8,600 new cars were registered during the last quarter of 2013, indicating an increase of 20% on the same period in 2012 and the highest figure recorded for the quarter since 2009.

The Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) received 5,463 applications for a driving test in June 2021, a significant drop on the more than 15,000 applications they received in May. The figure was revealed in the latest report from the the DVA, 'Monthly Tests Conducted Statistics – June 2021'.
