Paisley awarded freedom of Ballymena
DUP leader, Ian Paisley has been awarded the freedom Ballymena following a special council meeting.
Despite the fact that six Ulster Unionist councillors stayed away from the vote, DUP councillors were able to push the vote through.
Last night's vote was the second attempt by DUP councillors to get the vote passed. Last month Ulster Unionists blocked a vote by abstaining while the SDLP voted against the move.
However, the decision by the UUP to stay away meant the DUP had sufficient votes to carry the motion which needed the support of at least two-thirds of those councillors present.
DUP councillor Maurice Mills predicted that the move would be widely welcomed in the town.
