John Blair Expresses His Condolences On The Death Of Paul Hamill
Alliance South Antrim MLA John Blair has expressed his condolences after the passing of Antrim and Newtownabbey Councillor, Paul Hamill.
Mr Hamill, a former mayor of the borough, died aged 46 after contracting COVID-19
"The news Paul Hamill passed away is terribly sad and a great shock," said Mr Blair.
"Paul so easily and naturally set aside political differences to work with everyone in Council and will be greatly missed. My sincere sympathy goes out to his family, friends and DUP colleagues.
"I knew first-hand his dedication to the community, and I will forever remember the great effort he made as Mayor when I had children from the Chernobyl region visiting host families in the borough. This is only one example of the good work he did."
Chris Hazzard Meets With Pro-independence MPs
Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has met with pro-independence Scottish and Welsh parties in London.
The South Down MP said: "In Ireland, Scotland and Wales people are increasingly looking towards a new and better future outside of the union.
"The relentless contempt that the British government has shown for devolved institutions over many years has eroded any shred of confidence in what was an already fragile union.
"I have been meeting with the SNP, Plaid Cymru and pro-Irish unity Labour activists to discuss increasing levels of support for unity in Ireland.
"The conversation surrounding Irish unity is well underway. It was equally interesting to hear that there is a similar appetite for change in Scotland and Wales. Across these islands people are genuinely assessing a future beyond this union.
"People rightfully want to be in control of their own future and elect their own representatives to act in their best interests. There is an alternative to this narrow Tory agenda centred exclusively around the establishment in England.
"I look forward to continuing to strengthen ongoing dialogue with pro-independence movements in Scotland and Wales in the time ahead."
New Carrickfergus Recycling Plant Development To Get Underway
Carrickfergus' current recycling plant will close on Saturday 02 October at 5pm, as the site is set to be redeveloped with a new £1million waste recycling facility.
Residents who currently use the facility will be asked to travel to Larne South Household Recycling Centre (HRC), located at Island Road Lower, Islandmagee from Monday 4 October until early 2022.
Please note that it is necessary to book an appointment to gain access to Larne South HRC. This can be done using Mid and East Antrim Borough Council's online booking system.
The new Sullatober Household Recycling Centre, when completed, will be more than double the size of the existing facility to cater for some 40,000 residents. The new facility will be located directly opposite the current recycling site.
As well as increasing the amount of waste segregation by over 20%, the new facility will help Council to divert over 1,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year.
The development will also result in more efficient waste compaction and haulage, with new material streams for recycling and a reduction in carbon emissions.
Planning approval was granted in December 2020, with Council securing £995,000 in funding from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) for the project.
Work commenced at the site in May 2021 and is expected to last until February 2022.
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor William McCaughey, welcomed the progress made on the project.
"The new Sullatober Household Recycling Centre will provide a much more efficient service for the residents of Carrickfergus, and is a welcome milestone in Council's key strategic aim of creating a sustainable and healthy local environment which is protected for future generations.
"By increasing segregation of waste and the quality of materials collected, the new Recycling Centre will support local processors and the circular economy of Northern Ireland.
"The closure of the existing Sullatober recycling centre from Saturday 2 October at 5pm, will allow for construction works to progress. We are pleased to continue providing a recycling centre service to Carrickfergus and the surrounding areas through provision at Larne South Household Recycling Centre, into early 2022.
"Thank you to our local residents for their patience while the work is ongoing."

The changes will be rolled out between August and November and will affect inner-city homes currently on a black recycling box collection, as well as apartments with communal recycling facilities.

Recycling rate increases by 75% in 12 months
Belfast City Council has hailed figures that show a 75% increase in recycling as an "early Christmas present for the environment". The Council reported that recycling rates have increased dramatically over the past year. The amount of waste diverted away from landfill for recycling has increased by almost 75% over the past 12 months.

Council adds 5,000 homes to paper recycling scheme
The next phase of Belfast City Council’s paper recycling scheme is currently being rolled out in the west of the city. Some 5,000 residents of the Turf Lodge and Suffolk areas, as well as sections of the Glen Road and Upper Springfield Road, will soon receive a blue wheelie bin for paper recycling.
