New Bill To Protect Assembly From Collapse

Westminster MP's are set to pass a new law to protect the Northern Ireland Assembly from collapse.

Following the resignation of First Minister Paul Givan, Stormont Minister's are able to meet but are unable to make any decisions on outstanding policies and legislation.

The new law will remove the requirement for the Northern Ireland secretary to set a date for an election if the positions of first and deputy first minister are not filled by the end of the week.

Under the new law – the NI Ministers, Elections and Petitions of Concern Bill – the Northern Ireland Assembly to continue without a functioning executive for at least six months.

During that time ministers would continue to run their respective departments.

It is understood that a House of Lords amendment would apply the Bill retrospectively and cover Mr Givan's resignation.
