SF Welcomes Careless Driving Offence
Sinn Féin have welcomed new legislation that makes careless driving a fixed penalty notice offence.
Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan said: "I welcome legislation being taken forward to make careless driving a fixed penalty notice.
"Careless driving is a prevalent road safety issue and is a constant factor in road collisions.
"Its important that careless driving is treated as a major road safety risk it is and that we have zero tolerance for such behaviour.
"One death on the road is one too many and we need to ensure that we have the best measures in place to increase road safety for all road users."
SDLP Welcomes Move On CPR And Defibrillator Training
The SDLP have welcomed the announcement that CPR and defibrillator training is to be added to the school cirriculum.
SDLP Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath had originally introduced a bill on the issue in the Assembly, but withdrew it after his proposals were accepted by Education Minister Michelle McIlveen.
Welcoming the introduction of the Bill, Mr McGrath said: "I introduced this bill because I believed it had the power to save lives and I’m delighted to see my proposal added to the school curriculum today. After learning how bleak the outlook was for someone who suffered a cardiac arrest in a non-hospital setting, I realised that we needed to do something to give people a better chance of survival and to equip people to help.
"The best way to ensure that future generations are trained to assist in case of an emergency is by introducing this training for everyone in schools. Currently around 1,400 people suffer a cardiac arrest each year in the North outside of hospital, shockingly less than one in ten survive. If every person was trained to provide help and support I truly believe we can change this figure for the better.
"As part of my bill I engaged with the health and education sectors and the general public and the plans received overwhelming support. Such was the backing for this important training that the Minister decided to introduce it herself, forgoing the need for the legislative process.
"The introduction of the training follows on from SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon’s announcement of 134 new defibrillators at bus and train stations across the North. With these new machines in place our young people will now have both the tools and the expertise to intervene when necessary and save lives."
Alliance Marks European Day Of Remembrance Of Victims Of Terrorism
It is important we remember all the lives lost to terrorism here and further afield, Alliance's Sorcha Eastwood has said.
The Alliance Legacy spokesperson was speaking on European Day of Remembrance of Victims of Terrorism. She said it is vital to send a message of people standing united in the face of terrorism.
"It important we remember all those lives lost to terrorism, not just in the Troubles, but further afield over the years," said Councillor Eastwood.
"Lives have been lost and others changed forever by people being injured or having their loved ones killed. Those who have lived their lives following experiencing something like have shown a courage I can only imagine and which I am constantly amazed by.
"It is vital we show we can stand united against terrorism and the evil it represents, especially in a region where some want to drag us back to the dark days of our past."
