Belfast Telegraph journalists begin two-day strike
Journalists from Northern Ireland's biggest regional daily newspaper have gone on strike today over pay and condidions.
Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Belfast Telegraph, which is part of Sir Anthony O'Reilly's Independent News and Media group, began the 48-hour strike at 3am on Friday.
Union members recently rejected a 3% pay offer from management and are seeking parity in pay and conditions with colleagues in Dublin.
While the NUJ claimed nearly all of the 100 editorial staff had agreed to the stoppage, management today said that only around a third of the editorial staff had actually taken part in Friday's stoppage.
Today's strike action follows a breakdown in talks at the Labour Relations Agency that failed to resolve the dispute which first began last October.
Belfast Telegraph editor Ed Curran said that despite this weekend's protest all editions of the Belfast Telegraph and its numerous supplements would continue to be printed as normal.
