World War II weapons found in Co Down field

Army bomb experts have carried out a controlled explosion on weapons believed to date back to World War II.

The weapons, a 2.5 inch rocket and two-inch mortar shell, were discovered by a passer-by in a field in Kilkeel at around 5.30pm on Monday.

The area surrounding the Ballymageogh Road was immediately cordoned off as the army team worked to make the 60-year-old munitions safe with

a controlled explosion.

Ballymena Man Fined For Damaging Ancient Field System
A retired sheep farmer has been fined for damaging an ancient field system, which has existed for more than 1,000 year, in County Antrim. Robin Hunter (54) was fined £2,000 at Antrim County Court after he pleaded guilty to unauthorised works on a scheduled monument near Moorfields.
