Minister praises Greater Shankill Clean-up Forum
Equality Minister, John Spellar today praised the Greater Shankill Clean-up Forum for receiving a prestigious award under the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.
The award was made in recognition for their work in removing sectarian graffiti from the local community.
Since May 2003, the Forum has been working with schools and community groups in the Shankill area to remove paramilitary related murals and graffiti.
To date, 27 murals have been removed together with much sectarian graffiti and 7,000 meters of painted kerbstones.
Mr Spellar said: “The Greater Shankill Clean-Up Forum’s initiative is a successful example to many communities of how the community themselves can work with Departments and Agencies to improve the image of their area.
“All concerned are to be commended for the recent recognition of their hard work by the charity ENCAMS, which runs the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign during its ‘People and Places Conference 2004’ held in Edinburgh in March.
The Greater Shankill Clean UP Forum was established in January 2003 through a request by the local community with a view to raising the image of the Greater Shankill area.
It includes representatives from the local community, Belfast City Council, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, DRD Roads Service and the Northern Ireland Office.

Refurbishment Work Completed At Conway Youth Centre
Refurbishment work has been completed at the Conway Youth Centre in the Greater Shankill area. Social Development Minister, Nelson McCausland has visited the new centre, where a total of £244,132 has been spent transforming the building.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.
