Alliance Submits Motion To End Problematic Pavement Parking

Alliance has said that it is time to "crack down" on problematic pavement parking as it makes the footpaths less accessible and puts people at risk.

Alliance's Belfast City Councillor, Tara Brooks made the comments after submitting a motion to Belfast City Council.

Tara Brooks stated: "It's never acceptable to park in a manner which forces people off a footway and into the road. Yet the problem continues to grow

"Pavement parking affects everyone in Belfast, but disproportionately children, people with disabilities and those with prams. It is essential Belfast City Council plays its full role in reinforcing the message that pavements are for people.

"However, I know that Belfast City Council alone can't deal with this problem. That's why I'm calling for the Department for Infrastructure to step up its game. As our society moves away from the prioritisation of cars over pedestrians it's time that DFI and the PSNI crack down on rampant pavement parking which puts lives in danger and makes our streets less accessible."

Council Relaunches 'Winter Woollies' Campaign

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has relaunched its 'Winter Woollies' campaign as the temperature begins to drop and the cost of heating rises.

The scheme which received over 500 handmade donations last year calls on crafters to knit or crochet items that will provide warmth and comfort to residents across the borough.

Donations can be dropped off at either Mossley Mill or Antrim Civic Centre from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Crafters should leave their name, address and contact details on the donated item so that it has a chance to be selected as a 'Mayor's Favourite Item'. The council has also suggested that a heartfelt message is left with the item so it can be passed on to the recipient.

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Mark Cooper said: "I am pleased to see this initiative returning for a second year and I know that these pieces are the result of a lot of hard work. I can’t wait to see the entries and look forward to selecting the winners.

"I hope that this scheme will benefit both the recipients of the handmade warm clothing and that those crafting will also gain personal fulfilment, creative expression, and a sense of community engagement through their contribution."
