Investigation Launched Into Cause Of L'Derry Apartment Block Fire
An investigation has been launched into the cause of a large fire in L'Derry on Monday, 16 October.
The fire was first reports just before midday at an apartment block and retail premises on Lower Clarendon Street in the Northland area.
At its height 10 appliances attended the scene, and over 60 Firefighters were involved in the operation from Crescent Link, Northland, Strabane, Limavady, Maghera, Magherafelt, Dungiven, Omagh and Newtownstewart Fire Stations.
A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue (NIFRS) spokesperson said: "Firefighters rescued two people from the 5th floor of the building and 1 person was left in the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.
"Our Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the duration of the incident to ensure that the fire was brought under control.
"We would like to thank the public for their patience whilst we dealt with the incident.
"The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition and the incident was dealt with at 4.12pm. "

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.
