Peace process media coverage under scrutiny
Media coverage of Northern Ireland's peace process will come under scrutiny this week, when a leading US media analyst speaks at INCORE, the university peace and conflict research institute.
The lecture, ‘Looking through Different Lenses: Media Coverage of the Northern Ireland Conflict and Peace Process’, will be given by Dr Janice Barrett, Associate Professor of Communication at Boston University College of Communication.
INCORE Director Professor Gillian Robinson said: "With the rapid expansion of technology in quantitative and qualitative terms, and the globalisation of the information age, few aspects of global society have capitalised as well as print and electronic media.
"How Northern Ireland’s particular situation is perceived is greatly influenced by the prevailing discourse of particular media coverage, be that in Belfast, Dublin, London, or further afield on the continent and in the US. With this in mind, we are delighted to be getting the views of such an eminent scholar as Dr Barrett on these issues."
Dr Barrett is currently a Fulbright Scholar at the School of Communications at Dublin City University. She teaches in the Dublin City University's journalism Master's program, as well as researching the media coverage of Northern Ireland’s conflict and peace process.
The talk takes place at 1pm on Friday in Aberfoyle House on the University’s Magee campus.
