Man Arrested In Connection With Assault And Arson
A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an assault in Carrickfergus and a fire in Greenisland.
On Thursday evening, around 9pm, a woman was reportedly assaulted by a man while sitting in her car on Prince Andrew Way in Carrickfergus. The woman sustained serious facial injuries after being struck multiple times before the assailant fled on foot.
Following this incident, police responded to a fire at a flat on Longfield Gardens in Greenisland around 3am. The fire, which is being investigated as arson, did not result in any reported injuries. The suspect in both incidents was identified and arrested by police on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, arson with intent to endanger life, non-fatal strangulation, and dangerous driving. He is currently in police custody.
Police enquiries are ongoing and if you were in the vicinity of Prince Andrew Way in Carrickfergus between 8.30-9.30pm on Thursday evening, or Longfield Gardens in Greenisland at around 3am on Friday morning, and have information, dash-cam or CCTV footage, officers would ask you to call them in Larne on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1702 17/10/24. Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.

Car set on fire in Greenisland
Police in Carrickfergus are appealing for information after a car was set on fire in Greenisland last night. It is believed the driver’s window of the Vauxhall Corsa was smashed before the vehicle was set on fire in the Gortlane Drive area of Greenisland shortly before 10pm. A motive for the attack has yet to be established.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

Police have said they believe missing Omagh man, Shane Sharkey, has been found in the Republic of Ireland. A police appeal for help in finding the 35-year-old has been cancelled, with police saying they now believe they know where he is. No further details have been released but police thanked the public for their help.
