Student charged with causing death by reckless driving

A 19-year-old man who was at the wheel of a car when four people died earlier this year has been charged with causing death by reckless driving.

Curtis Armstrong, from Ivy Hill in Lisburn, who appeared before Antrim Magistrates Court yesterday, was also charged with having no insurance.

Armstrong was driving along the Ballyhill Road, Ligoniel, on the outskirts of Belfast in February when his vehicle hit a roadside tree and overturned into a nearby field.

His four passengers, Ian Currie, 18, and Philip McMurray, 19, both from Banbridge, Joseph McDonald, 19, from Belfast, and a fourth victim whose name has not been released at the request of his parents, all died in the accident.

They were all students at Lisburn College of Further Education, which later set up a counselling service in the aftermath of the tragedy.
