Packages with white powder sent to SDLP members

Several packages containing white powder have been sent to members of the SDLP and the headquarters of the Policing Board.

For the second time this week, SDLP assembly member, Pat Ramsey was targeted when an envelope containing Mass cards and powder arrived at his home in Londonderry. Party leader Mark Durkan also received a similar package to his home in the city.

Mr Durkan said those behind the attacks were playing "nasty, sick tactics".

"What I resent most, on behalf of all the people we represent, is the way that those responsible are prepared to put family members and even very young children in the front line," he said.

In Belfast, packages were sent to the headquarters of the Policing Board on the Ormeau Road and to a party member and a DPP delegate in Cookstown.

A spokesperson said: "The police and emergency services were called to deal with this and as a precautionary measure, staff were evacuated for a short time."

Police have taken all the packages away for forensic examination.
