Met Office Issues Yellow Weather Warning For Snow And Ice
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice and snow across all of Northern Ireland, coming into effect from 4pm today, Wednesday, until 11am on Thursday.
The warning advises that showers of rain and sleet near coasts, and snow inland, will continue to affect the north and west of the region this evening, overnight and into Thursday morning. As temperatures drop below freezing, this will lead to icy patches on untreated surfaces, while a few centimetres of fresh snow could accumulate in some areas, mainly above 100 metres.
The Met Office has issued advice on how to stay safe during the icy weather. They recommend allowing extra time for journeys, both on foot and by car. Pedestrians are advised to use main roads which are likely to have been gritted, and cyclists should stick to main roads where possible.
Drivers are warned that road conditions could be dangerous and are advised to plan their route carefully, allowing extra time for their journey. They should also check for road closures or delays to public transport before setting off and amend their plans if necessary.
The Met Office advises drivers to carry essential supplies in their car in case of delays, such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, an ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, a high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.
The weather warning is expected to be updated, so the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the latest forecast for your area.
