Consultation Launches On Biennial MOT Testing For Some Vehicles
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has launched a 12-week public consultation on proposals to change the frequency of MOT testing for some private cars, motorcycles, and light goods vehicles from annual to biennial.
The consultation, which runs until 16th April 2025, builds upon a 2021 Call for Evidence on Biennial MOT testing.
While the first mandatory vehicle test will remain at four years for private cars and motorcycles, and three years for light goods vehicles, the proposed changes would see subsequent tests conducted every two years.
Minister John O'Dowd stated: "This consultation will explore the potential benefits of biennial MOT testing, considering factors such as road safety, environmental impact, insurance premiums, and the potential impact on the local automotive industry."
He emphasised that modern vehicles are built to higher standards, potentially reducing the need for annual testing.
O'Dowd encouraged all stakeholders, including the public, the automotive industry, road safety organisations, and environmental groups, to participate in the consultation and share their views on the proposed changes.
