Minister calls for introduction of MOT disc
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Angela Smith has announced proposals for the introduction of an MOT disc for motorists in Northern Ireland.
It is hoped that the MOT disc, like the tax disc, will act as a reminder to motorists when their MOT test is due.
Explaining the move, the Minister said: "How many motorists suddenly realise that the MOT certificate is up for renewal near or even after the expiry date? I am therefore seeking the public’s views on this matter before deciding whether to make display of an MOT disc compulsory.
“This though is not simply about an eye catching reminder to renew. Vehicles not tested on time may have serious defects. The MOT test provides an incentive to motorists to have their cars serviced in preparation for the test. Letting this lapse can make the vehicles on our roads more dangerous.
"By having your vehicle tested on time and displaying the new MOT disc you will be showing that you care about road safety and the benefits of a cleaner environment.”
The consultation document outlining proposals to reduce the problem of motorists failing to apply for the MOT test on time was published via the DOE’s Driver and Vehicle Testing Agency (DVTA).
Copies of the Consultation Document can be obtained from the Driver & Vehicle Testing Agency, Balmoral Road, Belfast BT12 6QL. The closing date for responses is 24 January 2003.

Roads Service Ready For Winter Weather
Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd has confirmed that the Department's winter service team is prepared to tackle the current cold snap. Around 300 staff and 130 gritters are ready to salt main roads, while 12 snow blowers are available for deployment if necessary. To ensure a comprehensive winter service, the Department has allocated £3.

As if drivers haven't enough of a 'taxing time' already, with a much more aggressive approach by the authorities targeting those who fail to pay their road fund licences, drivers in Northern Ireland will soon be facing a fine of £200 if they fail to display an MOT disc on windscreens.

Headlamp beam test to be introduced for MOT test
Environment Minister Angela Smith today confirmed that a new headlamp beam test is to be introduced into the MOT from the end of March. Commenting on the test, the Minister said the new examination would be expected to improve road safety.
