298 Arrested For Drink Or Drug Driving Over Christmas Period
Preliminary figures released by the PSNI reveal that 298 people were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving between 1st December 2024 and 1st January 2025.
Chief Superintendent Sam Donaldson from the PSNI's Operational Support Department expressed concern over the figures, stating: "Despite urging drivers not to take any risks by drinking or taking drugs and driving, 298 people ignored our warning and were arrested."
He emphasised the serious consequences of driving under the influence: "Every single person who gets behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking or taking drugs is putting themselves and other road users at serious risk. Just one drink can impair decision-making and significantly increase the risk of a collision. Tragically, 69 people lost their lives on our roads in 2024, and many of these incidents involved alcohol or drug impairment."
Chief Superintendent Donaldson urged drivers to adhere to the "Fatal Five" road safety guidelines:
• Don't drink or take drugs and drive.
• Slow down.
• Don't be careless.
• Always wear your seatbelt.
• Never use your mobile phone while driving.
He stressed: "If we all follow the Fatal Five, more people will live. If we follow these steps, fewer people will have to contend with life-changing injuries."
The PSNI encouraged members of the public to report suspected instances of drink or drug driving by contacting them directly at 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
