Political talks set for mid-September
Prime Minister Tony Blair and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will lead talks aimed at restoring the local political institutions in mid-September, it has emerged today.
It has been confirmed that the Prime Minister and the Taoiseach will meet in the week prior to the talks which are scheduled to take place on 16 to 18 September.
Details outlining the arrangements for the resumption of talks have been sent to all political parties in a joint letter from the Secretary of State Paul Murphy and the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen.
Ahead of the discussions, the political parties have been invited to Parliament Buildings at the beginning of September to seek common ground in advance of negotiations.
The Secretary of State will meet the parties on Strand 1 issues on Wednesday, September 1, and the Irish government will also be available for consultation and discussion with the parties.
The following day, the two governments will hold trilateral talks with the parties on Strands 2 and 3.

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.

Prime Minister and Taoiseach meet to discuss way ahead

The Northern Ireland Secretary of State, Peter Hain, and the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, have invited a number of political parties to take part in meetings in Hillsborough today. On the agenda of the low-key meetings are policing, parades and restorative justice. Mr Hain referred to the meetings as a "stock-tacking" exercise.
