Jobs blow for Magherafelt saw mill plant
Thirty-three workers at a Co Londonderry saw mill plant are to be made redundant because of "intense price competition" from suppliers in the Baltic States and Russia.
Management at BALCAS, which makes fencing and garden products for the DIY retail sector, said its Magherafelt plant will close next month with the loss of 33 jobs.
However, 47 people employed at the factory are to avoid the cuts after a number of the products were integrated into the company's facility in Enniskillen.
Talks between management at the company, which is one of Ireland's largest timber-processing companies, and the ATGWU union are taking place to negotiate redundancies.
