Police in Belfast have issued a direct appeal to parents and guardians following an incident where a 15-year-old girl was injured after being struck on the head with a brick.

The incident occurred at approximately 10.20pm on Tuesday, 1st April, in the Broadway area of south Belfast. The injured girl was taken to hospital for treatment, and while her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police have emphasised the potential for much more serious consequences.

A 15-year-old boy has since been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place in connection with the incident. He is expected to appear before Belfast Youth Court on Monday, 28th April.

Chief Inspector Conway highlighted the ongoing issue of young people gathering in the area each evening, engaging in reckless, dangerous, and sometimes criminal behaviour with little regard for the public and local residents. He stressed that this behaviour must stop before someone is seriously hurt.

"It's only through sheer luck that we aren't looking at much more serious consequences for this young girl," said Chief Inspector Conway. "Young people have been gathering in the area each evening, behaving recklessly, dangerously and in some instances criminally with little regard for other members of the public and local residents. This behaviour has to stop before someone is hurt, or worse." While police have increased their presence in the area and are liaising with community representatives, Chief Inspector Conway made a direct plea to parents: "We are in the area each evening, providing a visible policing presence and liaising with community representatives, but today I want to ask local parents - do you know where your children are, and who they are with?"

He urged parents to speak to their children about the dangers of getting involved in such behaviour, pointing out the potential for a criminal record to negatively impact future employment and travel opportunities.

Chief Inspector Conway acknowledged the concerns of local residents and the wider public regarding the ongoing anti-social behaviour and reiterated the police's commitment to working with partner agencies, local representatives, and the community to address the issue.

He also called on the public to report any crimes or incidents that affect their quality of life, stating that this helps police focus their patrols and take appropriate action.
