Translink Reports Passenger Growth Following Investment
Translink has announced a significant increase in passenger numbers, with an additional 3 million journeys made in the 2024/25 period compared to the previous year. The public transport provider says this growth demonstrates the positive impact of sustained investment in its services across Northern Ireland.
Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway highlighted the progress made in transforming transport in the region, citing the opening of two key passenger facilities as landmark achievements. "By driving modal shift we're supporting economic, environmental and social wellbeing; public transport is crucial for delivering Programme for Government (PfG) ambitions and integral to achieving carbon emission reduction targets set out in the NI Climate Change Act. We remain committed to investing in our fleet, infrastructure and services to be first choice for travel in Northern Ireland," Mr Conway stated. Belfast Grand Central Station, which opened last autumn, is now Ireland's largest integrated transport hub, offering seamless connections between bus, coach, rail, and active travel options. Translink reports strong early performance and positive user feedback for the station, with a 96% satisfaction rating. The new hub is seen as a key factor in encouraging more people to choose public transport.
Furthermore, the opening of York Street Train Station last April has provided modern and accessible facilities in North Belfast, acting as an attractive gateway to areas such as Ulster University, Sailortown, the Cathedral Quarter, City Quays, and Cityside.
Improvements to Ticketing Systems have also played a role in the increased passenger numbers, with contactless payments now available on all Translink services, making it easier for passengers to "tap and go."
Translink is also progressing towards its ambition of achieving net zero emissions by 2040, with over 250 zero-emission buses now operating across Northern Ireland, covering over 7 million emissions-free miles to date. The company has also launched a 'Better On Board' charter, encouraging NI organisations to promote public transport use among their employees and stakeholders to help meet their own environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.
