Police Issue Guidance Ahead Of Irish Cup Final In Belfast
Police have issued guidance to those planning to attend the Irish Cup Final in Belfast this Saturday, 3rd May, urging them to be mindful and respectful of others.
Belfast Area Commander, Chief Superintendent Jeremy Lindsay, stated that there will be a heightened police presence in the city to ensure public safety and enjoyment of the event.
"We want everyone to stay safe and enjoy this occasion. As such, the public will notice an increased police presence in the city," he said.
Chief Superintendent Lindsay called on supporters to be considerate as they travel through residential and commercial areas near the stadium. He further emphasised the importance of good behaviour from all fans. "All fans should behave in a manner befitting the reputations of their teams and refrain from intentionally impeding or obstructing anyone from going about their lawful business."
The Chief Superintendent also addressed the issue of public processions, reminding attendees that while freedom of assembly is a fundamental right, blocking roads is illegal and all public processions require approval from the Parades Commission.
"If a procession proceeds without this approval, we will take proportionate action in response," he warned. "If we issue necessary instructions and these are not complied with, subsequent actions may include arrest and detention."
Chief Superintendent Lindsay also highlighted the use of technology in their policing operation. "CCTV and video evidence will be utilised as part of the policing operation in an effort to deal with any criminal offences or anti-social behaviour. We will take all necessary steps to identify and deal with anyone who chooses to commit an offence."
