HMRC Launches User-Friendly Online Help For Tax Compliance Checks

Businesses and individuals can now access a new online interactive tool from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) designed to simplify and explain tax compliance checks.

The Interactive Compliance Guidance tool, now available on GOV.UK, offers information to help users understand various aspects of HMRC compliance checks, including:

• What HMRC compliance checks entail.

• The reasons behind HMRC's requests for specific information or documents.

• How to request additional support due to health or personal circumstances.

• The process for appointing someone to act on their behalf.

• Steps to take if they disagree with an HMRC decision.

• How to pay a tax assessment or penalty.

The tool consolidates existing compliance guidance and video resources into a single, easily navigable platform.

Joanne Walker, Technical Officer at the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) and a member of the Customer Experience Advisory Group (CEAG), praised the new resource. "When unrepresented customers have a tax compliance problem, it can be difficult for them to find the help they need. This new interactive tool from HMRC makes compliance guidance readily accessible in one place, and easier for people to find the information that is relevant to them. The links to the extra support available will be especially valuable for the most vulnerable customers."

She added: "Along with other stakeholders, I have commented on and tested the interactive guidance tool at various stages and a lot of work has been put into its development. It clearly sets out the topics, uses an easy-to-understand question and answer format, provides clear guidance videos, step-by-step explanations, and links to other relevant guidance."

Penny Ciniewicz, HMRC Director General for Customer Compliance, commented on the launch. "We know that compliance checks can be daunting and we are always looking for ways to improve our support for customers."

This tool joins other interactive resources launched by HMRC, such as the 'VAT Registration Estimator'. HMRC's GOV.UK guidance receives over 750 million views annually, and its online services and free app aim to provide secure and convenient ways for businesses and individuals to manage their tax affairs.

The guidance and interactive tools are free to use and available directly on GOV.UK for informational purposes only. Users will not be registered for any taxes, and HMRC will not collect or store any personal information through the tool. HMRC regularly reviews its guidance and welcomes feedback to enhance user understanding and experience.
