Titanic Hotel Belfast Wins Global Design Award

Titanic Hotel Belfast, housed in the historic former headquarters of Harland & Wolff, has been honoured with the Hotels ByDesign People's Choice Award, a prestigious international recognition presented by the primetime CBS television programme.

Series 3 of the acclaimed hotel design show celebrated the Belfast hotel for its distinctive design and authentic sense of history, placing it on a global stage. The award was decided by a public vote from a shortlist of 26 hotels and resorts worldwide featured in the series, including high-profile destinations such as Dubai's Atlantis The Royal.

Located in the heart of Belfast's Titanic Quarter, which attracts over 3.6 million visitors annually, the hotel is a significant part of the Maritime Mile. The building's transformation, with architecture by Robinson McIlwaine Architects and interiors by Millimetre Design, has preserved the essence of the original Harland & Wolff drawing offices where Titanic and her sister ships, Olympic and Britannic, were designed between 1909 and 1914. This makes Titanic Hotel Belfast arguably the most authentic hotel of its kind globally.

This latest accolade follows the World Travel Awards 2024, where Titanic Hotel Belfast was named Northern Ireland's Leading Hotel for the seventh consecutive year, acknowledging its exceptional service, luxury, and unique historical guest experience.

The Hotels ByDesign programme highlighted the hotel's extraordinary adaptive reuse of the historic building. Design features showcased included the incorporation of over 100-year-old surplus Villeroy & Boch tiles, originally intended for the swimming pools on both Titanic and Olympic, which now clad a feature island bar in the hotel's main public bar, Drawing Office Two. This space also boasts an extraordinary three-storey barrel-vaulted ceiling, the sole surviving example of this naval architecture style worldwide.

Other celebrated design elements include the restored late 1800s grand staircase, salvaged original steel safe doors (now displayed in the hotel's Wolff Grill), and Victorian-inspired bedrooms featuring custom details like aged mirrors, faux rivets, Art Deco furniture, hanging ships' lanterns, and rare maritime artwork.

The 119-bedroom hotel not only commemorates RMS Titanic but also the broader achievements of Harland & Wolff. The company played a pivotal role in developing concepts like the "floating hotel" and the "grand staircase," innovations that continue to influence modern cruise ship design.

Guests at Titanic Hotel Belfast can immerse themselves in history through a "Heritage Trail" displaying over 500 artefacts from the Harland & Wolff archives, including artwork, photographs, drawings, and models. Dining experiences are also steeped in heritage, with the Wolff Grill offering traditional Northern Irish cuisine with views towards The Titanic Experience and the Harland & Wolff Slipways. Drawing Office Two, where iconic liners were designed, now serves as a vibrant space for lunch, drinks, and afternoon tea, which can also be enjoyed in the Art Deco-styled Harland Bar.

Adrian McNally, General Manager of Titanic Hotel Belfast, said: "Winning the Hotels ByDesign People's Choice Award is a huge honour for our dedicated Titanic Hotel Belfast team. We are incredibly proud of how our story resonates with people around the globe and how its design connects with Belfast's shipbuilding heritage. It's fantastic that our visually spectacular hotel has been voted as the people's favourite among a group of truly unique hotels from across the world and reinforces our position on the global stage. We want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who voted for us and continues to support us!"

Maria Rice, Interior Designer at Millimetre Design, added: "Designing a boutique hotel within one of Belfast's historically significant buildings was an unforgettable experience. The opportunity to honour the spirit of the shipbuilding era while crafting a modern, immersive guest experience was both creatively and culturally rewarding. Every detail was a nod to Belfast's proud industrial past, reimagined through the lens of contemporary hotel design."

Titanic Hotel Belfast is conveniently located, being a 5–10-minute drive from Belfast City Airport and approximately 25 minutes from Belfast International Airport, with Dublin Airport around 1 hour and 40 minutes away.
