Essential Travel Advice Issued Ahead Of Open Championship
Ahead of the 153rd Open Championship in Portrush next week (13-20 July), Translink has unveiled comprehensive travel plans, urging spectators and visitors to plan journeys well in advance to ensure smooth access to the world-class golfing event.
With an anticipated 278,000 visitors, the transport provider is deploying every available train, coach, and bus to accommodate the significant influx, particularly during the main championship days from 17-20 July.
Translink's extensive transport strategy is designed to provide extra capacity for over 115,000 passengers travelling to and around Portrush, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and enhance the visitor experience on the stunning Causeway Coast. This includes a notable enhancement to train services, with increased capacity and frequency, along with additional routes to Portrush and late evening return options. Complementing rail services, special bus and coach provisions will operate alongside normal Goldliner routes. The popular Ulsterbus 140 service, connecting Coleraine and Portrush, will see its frequency boosted to every five minutes, running from 05:50 until 23:00 daily (Monday to Sunday), with convenient stops at major caravan and camping sites along the route. Additionally, Ulsterbus 402 services between Coleraine and Ballycastle will offer extra morning (06:00 and 07:00) and evening (20:15 and 21:15) journeys, operating on a 20-minute frequency.
Spectators are strongly encouraged to visit www.translink.co.uk for full travel options and to plan their trip. Online booking is essential to secure tickets for special train and coach services. General travel advice includes arriving at stations 30 minutes prior to departure, as queuing systems will be in place with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those not attending the golf are advised, if possible, to travel to Portrush by train after 10:00. Due to high passenger numbers, space for bulky items such as bags, buggies, or bicycles will be limited. For the latest updates, passengers can follow @Translink_NI and use #OpenTravel.
Adding to the Championship excitement, Translink is also set to launch 'The T Zone', a free, fun, and family-friendly fanzone at Belfast Grand Central Station. Open throughout the tournament from Thursday, 17 July to Sunday, 20 July (09:00-17:00), 'The T Zone' will offer an interactive golf-themed experience, complete with mini golf, chipping challenges, and various giveaways.
