Foyle Cup 2025 Kicks Off With Grand Parade And Official Opening
The 2025 O'Neills Foyle Cup has been officially launched with a parade through L'Derry, attended by thousands of young footballers, coaches and supporters.
The procession culminated in Guildhall Square, where the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, formally declared the renowned youth football tournament open.
"Guildhall Square was awash with colour and noise for the official opening of the tournament," said Mayor McHugh. "It was such a wonderful sight to see thousands of youngsters here, decked out in their club colours and ready for a week they will never forget." The Foyle Cup, recognised as one of the world's biggest youth football tournaments, will feature over 900 teams, ranging in age from 8 to 19, competing over the next six days. This year's event has attracted an international contingent, with visiting teams from countries including Spain, America, and Canada. Matches will be played at venues across Derry, Tyrone, and Donegal, drawing an expected audience in excess of 250,000 spectators.
Mayor McHugh further emphasised the significant impact of the tournament: "As a Council are acutely aware of the crucial role the tournament plays in showcasing this City and District, attracting visitors and providing a platform for young people to express themselves." He highlighted the Council's pride in supporting the event through core funding and the provision of pitches, facilities, and staff support.
Concluding his address, Mayor McHugh extended his best wishes: "I want to wish all the players, coaches and supporters the very best of luck this week, enjoy the games and make memories to last a lifetime!"
