UU student skies her way to success
A University of Ulster physiotherapy student has water-skied her way into the record books at the recent Irish National Water-Skiing Championships 2004.
Laura McLernon won both the Open Ladies Slalom and the Open Ladies Jump disciplines by breaking her own national record with a score of 4.5 buoys on a 13-meter rope-length. She also broke a long-standing national record in the jump discipline, breaking the 30-metre barrier with a jump of 30.4 meters.
“My success this year in waterskiing has been significantly helped by the Sports Scholarship awarded by the University which went towards specialist coaching in the U.S," said Laura.
“I’ve also had a lot of support from the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland (SINI) and the physiotherapy course team at UU who made adjustments to my studies to allow me to undertake the specialist coaching and training.”
Laura will be competing in both disciplines in the European Under-21’s tournament, which will be held in Sweden later this month. She currently skis for the Lough Aghery Water-Ski Club.

A number of historical documents, including a letter by Seamus Heaney and passenger logs from emigration ships that departed Foyle Port for North America in the mid-1800s, are to be put on display as part of a regional tour of local libraries by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) has unveiled a searchable database of over three million names in an innovative partnership with the high-profile genealogy online platform Ancestry. Approximately 3.2 million name indexes, relating to valuation records for the period 1864 to 1933, are now free to access with an Ancestry.
