Primark scraps junior pay rates
Fashion retailer Primark has scrapped all junior rates of pay at its stores in Northern Ireland.
The decision has been welcomed by Usdaw, the trade union involved in negotiating the deal, who revealed that under the terms of a two-year agreement minimum rates of pay for Primark workers in Northern Ireland have increased from £5.60 per hour to £5.85 per hour (backdated to April 2004), with a further rise to £6.07 per hour from April 2005. The deal covers all 300 workers in the eight Primark stores across Northern Ireland.
Tony Bennett, Usdaw Deputy Divisional Officer, part of the team that negotiated the deal, said: "This is an excellent offer from Primark, with all workers getting above-inflation pay rises. The jewel in the crown is Primark accepting Usdaw's claim for an end to junior rates of pay. This means that all workers, irrespective of age, get the same rates of pay."
Northern Ireland is proving to be a rich recruiting ground for trade unions. A report published by the Department of Trade and Industry in July revealed that Northern Ireland had the highest union density in the UK, at 39.4%, compared to the UK average of 29.3%.
Usdaw (the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) is the UK's fifth largest union with over 335,000 members.
The eight Primark stores in Northern Ireland are: Ballymena, Belfast, Glengormley, Lisburn, Lisnagelvin, Newry, Newtownabbey and Newtownards.
