NI burglaries on the decrease say police
Police figures released today reveal a significant decrease in domestic burglaries across Northern Ireland.
Community Safety Officer, Sergeant Robert Murdie said that the marked decrease in incidents was evidence of a targeted policy aimed at disrupting the activities of potential offenders.
The figures for the period April to July show 2,270 incidents of domestic burglary recorded, a decrease of 11% on the same period last year.
Through the implementation of intelligence led and high visibility policing alongside proactive targeting of crime hotspots, police focus on offenders who cause fear amongst the most vulnerable and target homes in communities across Northern Ireland, Sergeant Murdie said.
This combined approach was aimed at helping to reduce fear of crime as well as the number of incidents, but more could be achieved, he added.
“Police success in reducing burglary incidents has come about not just through investigation but also through partnership-led policing and community involvement through schemes such as Neighbourhood Watch," he said.
“This reduction in incidents shows that the Police Service commitment to tackling burglary by working with others makes for an effective formula and, therefore, proves that we can do much more.
“By working together groups and individuals can help police target those who cause fear and upset in the community,” he said.

Police Probe Spate Of Co Down Burglaries
Police have launched an investigation following three burglaries in County Down over the weekend. Properties in the Newtownards and Bangor areas were targeted within a two hour period on Saturday evening, 05 October. A possible link has been identified, however it's not believed anything was stolen during any of the incidents.
