Pearson condemns racist attacks

Security minister Ian Pearson has condemned a racist attacks in the Portadown area as "utterly deplorable" following an attack on a Portuguese family at the weekend.

Three apartments in the Moeran Park area of Portadown were smashed in by a gang of men in the early hours of Saturday morning.

No one was injured in the incident however temporary accommodation was arranged for the Portuguese couple and their two children, aged four and six, who were living in one of the apartments.

Officers confirmed the attack was racially motivated but no arrests have yet been made.

Woman Dies In Garage Fire At Portadown Home
A woman has died after a fire in the garage of a house in Portadown, County Armagh. The fire at Oakleigh Park, off the Brownstown Road, was reported to police shortly after 07:20 GMT on Monday. Police and firefighters are still at the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire. The woman's name has not yet been released.

Orange Order Withdraws Application To Use Portadown Peoples Park
Portadown Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Duffy has welcomed the Orange Order’s decision to withdraw their application to use Portadown Peoples Park as part of their Mini Twelfth parade in the town. Councillor Paul Duffy said: "There will be a collective sigh of relief across all sections of the community in Portadown that common sense has prevailed.

Man And Woman Shot In West Belfast
A man and woman, aged in their 50s, have been shot in the legs in west Belfast. The attack happened at a house in Norglen Parade shortly after 6.15pm on Thursday, 12 January. The victims, understood to be husband and wife, were taken to hospital to be treated, however their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Heart Attacks Kill Six People In NI Every Week
Heart attacks kill six people in Northern Ireland every week, according to research by the British Heart Foundation (BHF). 314 people aged under 65 died from heart failure last year. In 2013/14, there were 5,400 heart attacks treated in Northern Ireland hospitals. This figure has risen from 4,600 the year before.
