Police launch domestic violence initiative in Larne
Police in Larne have distributed over 5,000 beer mats to licensed premises in the area in a bid to highlight the issue of domestic violence.
The mats were printed at the request of officers working in the PSNI's local Domestic Violence Team.
“We first heard of this initiative from our colleagues in Ballymoney and Coleraine District Command Units as they had distributed a substantial number of mats over the summer months,” said Constable Jan McKay, Domestic Violence Officer for Larne PSNI.
“We felt that while the idea was simple it was very effective and it could work just as well throughout Larne District Command Unit.
“As domestic violence is included in the 2004/05 Policing Plan for Larne DCU as a policing priority we felt the beer mat message campaign would reach a large proportion of the local community in a short period of time.”
Each beer mat carries the message 'Domestic violence and domestic abuse tears lives apart' along with an image of a person holding their head in their hands.
On the reverse, the mat emphasises the stark reality of the situation stating that domestic violence is a crime and that the law does not stop at the front door of any house.
“The Domestic Violence Unit felt the mats could also be used to advise potential victims that help and support is always available and domestic violence does not have to be tolerated,” added Constable McKay.
In a bid to reach out to potential victims the beer mats carry the contact details of the PSNI local Domestic Violence Unit and the 24-hour helpline of the Women’s Aid charity.

Domestic Violence Targeted
There has been a call for more to be done to tackle the issue of domestic violence. Members of the Northern Ireland Policing Board met this week with senior police officers and officials from the Department of Health & Social Services to discuss ongoing programmes of work to deal with both domestic violence and abuse.
