Doherty set to start for NI

Bristol City captain Tommy Doherty looks set to start for Northern Ireland in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan in Baku.

A favourite among fans despite only making six appearances for Northern Ireland, Doherty is likely to line up alongside Jeff Whitley and Damien Johnson in the centre of midfield for the first time since April.

Defensively, manager Lawrie Sanchez is likely to start with five at the back with Chris Baird coming back following injury to join Mark Williams, Colin Murdock, Aaron Hughes and Mark Clyde in defence.

With David Healy suspended for one game, and Paul McVeigh and Steve Jones both injured, Hull City’s Stuart Elliott will partner James Quinn up front.

Northern Ireland need to take three points from Saturday’s fixture if they are to have any chance of staying in contention to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

They then face Austria at Windsor Park next Wednesday, their last competitive fixture of 2004 before next March’s visit to Old Trafford and the mighty task of taking on England.
