Workforce training important to NI economy
Minister for Employment and Learning Barry Gardiner has emphasised the importance of workforce training and development to the Northern Ireland economy, during the annual National Training Awards gala ceremony held in Belfast City Hall.
During a speech to winners and their invited guests, Barry Gardiner said that Northern Ireland’s prowess in the competition was a testament to the value placed by local businesses, partnership agencies and individuals on education and training.
He added: “Northern Ireland can be proud of its track record in the National Training Awards competition and this year is no exception, with a staggering 41 Regional Award winners, eight Special Award winners and three winners of the coveted National Awards.
“You should take much pride in the result, as it underlines the importance in investing in people and their vital contribution to successful business and ultimately the socio-economic wellbeing of Northern Ireland.”
Describing the quest for development and business excellence as a necessary journey, the Minister said: “The hard work and commitment of organisations represented here tonight, are the tangible results of your quest for excellence. Not only was it necessary in terms of improving people and services, but also in improving business opportunities and economic prosperity.
“No matter what size or sector of business, success depends on the ability to adapt quickly to change and to capitalise on market opportunities, as they arise. Harnessing people power to capitalise on better business performance, customer service and to develop personal skills, is a recipe for success and building a better future here.”
One organisation and two partnerships, that had already received Regional Awards during the awards ceremony, were judged to have had their training programmes, initiatives and outcomes rated as exceptional, on a UK-wide basis, and were presented with National Awards, by the Minister.

- a a partnership between the North East Institute of Further and Higher Education and the Toyota Training Academy, for recruitment and training of motor car technicians;
- the Prudential for training large numbers of staff in new areas of business;
- a partnership between Newry and Kilkeel Institute of Further and Higher Education and the Northern Ireland Prison Service, for work with prisoners.

Lidl Northern Ireland Opens Two New Stores
Lidl Northern Ireland has announced the reopening of its Stewartstown Road store in West Belfast and the opening of a new store in Carryduff. Graduate Entry Medical Students To Benefit From Tuition Fee Loans
