Two wards open in the Mater Hospital
Health Minister Angela Smith has today opened two new wards at the Mater Hospital.
Funding of £3.5 million was made available from the Reinvestment and Reform Initiative (RRI) for 32 additional beds in the new McAuley Building.
Speaking during her visit, the Minister said: “The new beds will alleviate the serious bed pressures and trolley waits suffered at this hospital in the past. They will undoubtedly enhance the service provided to patients and ensure that they receive the best possible treatment and care.
“It is very encouraging to see and hear about the excellent work being carried out here. The standard of accommodation is very high. My Department is committed to the modernisation of the health service as set out in Developing Better Services and to the future provision of a range of services at the Mater Hospital.”
The additional beds in the Mater Hospital are part of an initiative to increase the total number of medical beds available in the greater Belfast area.
The beds, located in Wards C and F, comprises Phase I and Phase II of the hospital’s redevelopment scheme which was completed in early 2001 at a cost of £16 million.

Minister praises work of Mater Hospital
Health Minister Bairbre de Brún has paid a visit to the Mater Infirmorum Hospital in Belfast to see the new McAuley Building, built at a cost of £17 million. Opened in June this year, the new McAuley word block stands on the old convent site at the Mater Hospital.

Beds Closed At Altnagelvin Area Hospital Amid Bug Outbreak
All non-urgent routine procedures have been cancelled at Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Londonderry in an effort to stop the spread of a vomiting bug. The Western Health Trust said that approximately 25 beds at the hospital are to be "temporarily closed" at the hospital, also citing staff shortages and a "number of ongoing challenges".

Number Of NI Hospital Beds In Decline
The number of hospital beds available in Northern Ireland has fallen by more than 18%, despite an increase in admissions and hospital occupancy rates. The figures have been released as part of the Department of Health's 2012/13 Inpatient and Outpatient Hospital Statistics for Northern Ireland report.
